Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda has reaffirmed his support for combustion engine vehicles despite the global shift toward electric vehicles. He said he feels “very alone” as the automobile industry increasingly embraces EVs. Toyoda stated that he still enjoys the sound, smell, and driving experience of traditional engines.
He believes petrol and hybrid vehicles continue to play an important role, especially in regions where charging infrastructure remains limited. Under his leadership, Toyota developed performance models such as the GR86 and Supra. While the company is expanding its electric vehicle lineup, Toyoda continues to advocate for hybrids, hydrogen technology, and cleaner combustion engines.
