Entrepreneurship is gaining momentum among India's college students, with more than 22% already having launched their own businesses, according to a survey led by IIT Mandi. The study covered 25,783 students from more than 1,200 higher education institutions across the country. The findings suggest that an increasing number of young people are exploring business opportunities while pursuing their education. Rather than relying solely on traditional employment, students are showing interest in building their own ventures and creating opportunities through entrepreneurial initiatives.
The survey also found that 43% of students aspire to become entrepreneurs, highlighting the growing appeal of business ownership among India's youth. Meanwhile, 35.5% of student-run businesses have reportedly achieved regular sales, indicating that a proportion of these ventures are progressing beyond the initial stages. However, building a sustainable business also requires effective planning, access to funding, market knowledge and appropriate mentorship. The findings point to growing entrepreneurial ambition among students and highlight the potential role of higher education institutions in supporting young founders through guidance, resources and startup initiatives.
