Stock Markets Witness Sharp Decline

Amid concerns that tensions in West Asia may escalate further, domestic stock markets witnessed significant losses today. The Sensex declined by 1,635.67 points to close at 71,947.55, while the Nifty dropped 488.20 points to settle at 22,331.40. The Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices also fell by around 2.6%. Shares across sectors such as auto, FMCG, telecom, realty, as well as private and public sector banks, declined by 2–4%.

In the currency market, the rupee touched an all-time low of 95.12 against the US dollar during the session. However, it later recovered slightly and closed at 94.83.
