Indian Railways carries millions of passengers every day and has introduced various measures to improve their safety and comfort. Special provisions are available for women, senior citizens and passengers with disabilities. Women travelling alone may also benefit from certain seat-allocation arrangements while booking tickets through the IRCTC website or app. Where possible, the reservation system may try to accommodate a solo woman passenger in a compartment where other women are already travelling. However, such an allocation is not guaranteed and depends on berth availability, travel class and applicable reservation rules.
According to railway provisions, certain long-distance Mail and Express trains have a quota of six berths for women in Sleeper Class. Women travelling alone, as well as groups of women, may book berths under this quota, irrespective of age, subject to availability and the rules applicable to the train and class of travel. Indian Railways also provides for priority in lower-berth allocation to women aged 45 and above, senior citizens and eligible passengers with disabilities in specified reserved classes, including Sleeper, AC 3-Tier and AC 2-Tier. However, a lower berth is not guaranteed to every eligible passenger.
Women and senior citizens who receive an upper or middle berth can approach the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) if they need a lower berth. If a lower berth is vacant on the train, a change may be possible under the applicable railway rules. Passengers should note that berth changes depend on availability and cannot be assured in every case.
