Investors who prefer stable returns often consider government-backed small savings schemes and bank fixed deposits instead of market-linked investments. The Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (MIS) is designed to provide regular monthly interest, making it an option for retirees, pensioners and people who need predictable income. According to the report, the scheme offers an annual interest rate of 7.4%. The maximum deposit is ₹9 lakh for a single account and ₹15 lakh for a joint account. A minimum investment of ₹1,000 is permitted, and the principal is returned at maturity, subject to the scheme’s rules.
At a 7.4% annual rate, a ₹9 lakh MIS investment would generate ₹66,600 in interest per year, or ₹5,550 per month. By comparison, an illustrative bank FD rate of 6.5% would generate ₹58,500 annually on the same principal, equivalent to an average of ₹4,875 per month before tax. This makes the MIS return ₹8,100 higher per year under these assumptions. However, FD rates vary by bank, investment tenure and customer category; senior citizens may qualify for higher rates. Investors should compare current rates, premature withdrawal rules, tax treatment and their need for monthly income before choosing an option.
