Amid growing global business uncertainties, the number of companies offering high salaries to top CEOs is on the rise. In 2024-25, 145 CEOs in BSE-200 companies earned annual compensation exceeding $1 million (approximately ₹9 crore), marking a 71% increase over five years, up from 85 CEOs previously. However, the number of CEOs in promoter-led companies receiving such packages remains between 60 and 65.
The highest-paying sectors are IT/ITES, accounting for 34%, followed by manufacturing. In 2024-25, former Wipro CEO Thierry Delaporte topped the list with ₹168 crore, followed by Persistent Systems CEO Sandeep Kalra at ₹148 crore and Hero MotoCorp CMD Pawan Munjal at ₹109 crore.
Companies are increasingly offering performance-based incentives alongside fixed salaries, boosting accountability. The average annual CEO compensation rose from ₹9.3 crore in 2020-21 to ₹10 crore in 2024-25, while total corporate salaries increased from ₹2,700 crore to ₹4,700 crore over the same period.
