New BIS Rules for Smartphone Screen Guards

Smartphone screen guards could become costlier as new BIS regulations are set to take effect from April 1, 2027. The Centre has brought “Screen Protectors for Smartphones” under the compulsory registration framework and specified the Indian Standard IS 19348:2025. From the effective date, manufacturers and importers will have to ensure that screen protectors meet the prescribed quality and testing requirements before being sold in India.

Under the new framework, only screen protectors complying with the specified standards will be permitted for sale after the implementation date. Compliance, testing and certification-related expenses could add to manufacturers’ costs, potentially affecting retail prices. However, the government has not imposed an immediate ban on existing products and has provided manufacturers and importers with a transition period of more than six months to meet the new requirements.
