Karnataka’s Food Safety and Drug Administration Department has taken action after toxic Datura fruits and seeds were allegedly listed on quick commerce platforms as food products meant for human consumption. The department has temporarily suspended the food licences and registrations of Amazon, Swiggy Instamart and BigBasket until further orders. Officials launched an investigation after receiving complaints about the online sale of Datura products.
During the probe, authorities found Datura fruits and seeds listed as food items on some platforms, with FSSAI licence or registration numbers displayed on the listings. Some packets were also reportedly stored in warehouses for delivery against online orders. Datura, commonly known as thorn apple, naturally contains toxic alkaloids and consuming untreated parts can cause serious poisoning, including potentially life threatening complications.
The department said the explanations provided by the companies were not satisfactory. Amazon reportedly did not submit its explanation, while Instamart sought additional time to provide documents regarding the action taken. BigBasket said it had stopped the online sale of Datura fruits and would improve its labelling with a clear warning that such products are not meant for human consumption. Authorities have also ordered action against sellers and suppliers, including suspension of their food licences and removal of all listings or advertisements offering Datura for food or human consumption.
