Indian Railways has announced good news for train passengers. From July 31, 2026, passengers will be able to book additional luggage online while reserving their train tickets. Earlier, passengers had to visit railway parcel offices separately to book extra luggage, causing inconvenience and wasting time before travel.
Currently, free luggage limits vary depending on the travel class. Passengers can carry up to 70 kg in AC First Class, 50 kg in First Class and AC 2-Tier, 40 kg in AC 3-Tier, AC Chair Car and Sleeper Class, and 35 kg in Second Class without extra charges. Those carrying luggage beyond the free limit need to pay additional charges.
Passengers must ensure that excess luggage is properly booked to avoid penalties during inspections. Railway rules also apply to luggage size, and oversized items must be booked through luggage or parcel vans. Charges depend on weight, distance and train service, with the minimum luggage charge starting at Rs 30. The new system is expected to make train journeys more convenient for passengers.
