Rajinder Gupta, the founder of Trident Group, is known for his journey from humble beginnings to becoming a prominent name in Indian manufacturing. Born into a financially struggling family in Punjab, he reportedly left school at the age of 14 to support his family. He worked in factories manufacturing candles and cement pipes, earning just ₹30 a day. Despite these early challenges, Gupta continued to pursue his ambition of building a business of his own.
In 1985, Gupta established Abhishek Industries, laying the foundation for what would become the Trident Group. Over the years, the business expanded into textiles, yarn, home furnishings, paper and chemicals. Trident is particularly known for manufacturing towels, bedsheets and other textile products. Historical reports have placed the market valuation of its listed flagship, Trident Limited, at around ₹16,000 crore. In recognition of his contributions to trade and industry, Gupta was awarded the Padma Shri in 2007. His journey highlights how determination and entrepreneurial ambition can help build a major industrial enterprise.
