ChatGPT Sets Record as the Fastest-Growing AI App

The ChatGPT app from OpenAI has achieved a rare milestone by surpassing 1 billion monthly users as of May, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. Within just three years of its launch, ChatGPT has become the world’s first AI app to reach this mark. For comparison, platforms like TikTok took five years and Instagram nearly eight years to cross the same milestone, making ChatGPT the fastest-growing AI application globally.

OpenAI introduced the ChatGPT AI chatbot in 2023, and while it has established itself as a market leader, it faces strong competition from Anthropic’s Claude app. ChatGPT has recorded an annual growth of 62 percent, whereas Claude has surged with an impressive 640 percent growth, currently reaching 56 million monthly active users. Reports suggest that both companies are preparing for initial public offerings, with OpenAI already submitting draft documents to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, while Anthropic has reportedly filed confidentially.
