Centre Plans Digital Warning System for Traffic Violations

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed a Digital Warning System to improve road safety and curb repeated traffic violations. The system aims to send instant digital alerts to motorists who violate traffic rules and impose stricter action against habitual offenders.

The upgraded system will integrate the existing e-Challan platform with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. Drivers committing offences such as signal jumping, overspeeding, riding without a helmet or seat belt, wrong side driving, or using a mobile phone while driving will receive immediate warning messages on their registered mobile number and email.

The proposal also includes a demerit points system, where every traffic violation will be digitally recorded. If a driver exceeds the prescribed limit of violations or demerit points in a calendar year, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) may suspend or cancel the driving licence. Repeat offenders may also be required to undergo a driving re-test and road safety training before licence renewal.
