The Centre has approved field trials of ₹10 and ₹20 polymer banknotes. As part of the pilot programme, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is expected to issue 100 crore notes of each denomination on a trial basis. These polymer notes will circulate alongside the existing paper currency.
The key advantage of polymer notes is their greater durability compared with conventional paper notes. However, the exact time and cost involved in producing and issuing the new notes have not yet been clarified. The field trials are expected to help assess their practicality and durability.
