Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has announced plans to allocate a 5% stake in the company to a fund dedicated to public benefit. Responding to the move on X, tech entrepreneur Elon Musk sarcastically suggested that the shares should be distributed directly to people rather than channelled through a dedicated fund. He added that he might do something similar in the future. However, Musk did not clarify which company’s shares he intends to distribute or when and how such a plan might be implemented.
Anthropic has named its proposed fund the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. Under the plan, the fund will receive an additional 2% stake each time the company’s valuation increases by 50%. It will support charitable organisations, provide financial assistance to people in need and address challenges facing workers as artificial intelligence reshapes employment. Anthropic has also disclosed an allocation of $200 million for research into these issues. The company’s co-founders have previously pledged to donate 80% of their stakes, while nearly half of its employees have expressed interest in participating in the initiative. Overall, around 20% of the company’s equity could potentially be directed towards public benefit. Anthropic has stated that the fund will not be used for political donations or lobbying.
