Industry experts say the belief that Artificial Intelligence can significantly reduce operational costs by replacing employees may not be entirely accurate. Executives from major companies like NVIDIA and Uber revealed that AI automation expenses are becoming higher than employee salaries in several cases. Companies adopting AI coding assistants and automation agents are reportedly facing massive compute and token usage costs, especially in enterprise-level applications.
Despite rising expenses, businesses continue investing heavily in AI technologies to remain competitive. Uber CTO Praveen Neppalli stated that nearly 11% of the company’s live code updates are now generated by AI agents. Meanwhile, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang encouraged engineers to increase AI usage, even suggesting annual AI token spending of up to $100,000 for highly paid engineers. However, questions are being raised about AI efficiency as well, with an MIT report claiming humans outperformed AI in 77% of tested cases. Companies are now debating whether AI costs are temporary investments or permanent additions to operational budgets.
