India’s wind energy sector is growing rapidly, achieving a major milestone. According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, a record 6.05 gigawatts of wind power capacity was installed in the last financial year. This is the highest capacity added in a single year.
This achievement has broken the previous record of 5.5 gigawatts set in 2016–17. As a result, the total wind energy capacity in the country has reached 56 gigawatts by March 2026. The ministry stated that clear government policies, competitive pricing and a strong supply network have encouraged the growth of new wind power projects.
Most of the new wind energy installations during the last financial year were in Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra. These states have played a major role in boosting India’s renewable energy growth.
